YouTube Removed Over 100K Videos and 17K Channels in Q2 2019

YouTube now has a strict policy for those who publish harmful content and hate speeches on it. The giant video-sharing site removed over 100,000 individual videos that were shared to promote hate and extremism.
 
These numbers suggest a 5x increase in video removal from Q1 to Q2. Due to the presence of such content on YouTube, that provokes hate and contempt, YouTube has faced a lot of criticism in the past.
 
In response, YouTube has taken strict measures to remove such content and showing no leniency towards the people who promote it.
 
Over 17,000 channels and 500 million comments have been removed in the same period.
 
Furthermore, YouTube says it is now using ML technology to catch harmful content. Technology helps to immediately remove it before it hurts the emotions of aimed community/ religion/ race.
 
For this purpose, over 87% of videos removed in the second quarter of 2019 were first flagged by YouTube’s automated systems.
 
Moreover, the company claims to have become more strict with its spamming policy. As the company’s update mentioned 50% increase in the number of channels removed for violating spam policies.
 
YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki recently wrote on YouTube creator blog:
 
“A commitment to openness is not easy. It sometimes means leaving up content that is outside the mainstream, controversial or even offensive. But I believe that hearing a broad range of perspectives ultimately makes us a stronger and more informed society, even if we disagree with some of those views.”
 
Further, Google has also tasked 10,000 people companywide with detecting and reviewing. They remove the content that violates YouTube policies.
 
Besides the hate speech policy, YouTube also spoke earlier of the methodology they will use to flag content for review. With Machine Learning technology, YouTube is confident that it will remove all the content that is against the policies of the platform. Such content includes child sexual abuse images, hate speeches and terrorist recruitment videos.
