How Drones Are Saving Lives

Over the years drones have become common and you’ll often see them buzzing over parks,  and are even being increasingly used for video production as the popularity of aerial photography soars.

But have you assumed that this incredible flying invention is only for entertainment or photography?

If you have, then you are wrong. Drones can be used for saving lives, alerting people before a storm approaches the city, searching the lost ones, etc.

The high-pitched hums of their spinning propellers could replace the wail of ambulance sirens for global citizens as drones are put to work for saving lives – a medical emergency.

Let me quote one incident. In March of 2017, DJI, the manufacturers of the most popular commercial drones, shared a report about drones’ life-saving capabilities, citing cases in which drones manned by volunteers were used in floods and avalanches. It’s use resulted in 59 life-saving rescues in China, Canada, the U.S., and Turkey.

If 25 people search to search one square mile for missing persons, it will take 35 hours for them to cover that whole area. Meanwhile, a drone can cover the same area in less than 30 minutes.

The potential benefits a drone can offer in humanitarian services, DJI estimates that drones would be directly responsible for saving at least one person per week in the future.

Drones can help in faster search and rescue

Searching missing ones in wide and steep areas can be a tricky task. In such cases, a significant amount of manpower is needed to cover the whole area. Moreover, despite having the manpower, it can still take more time then they usually have.

In rescue missions, teams have to work at a frantic pace. They have to make sure they find the missing or stuck person before he goes out of sustenance on an uninhabited island, or killed by wild animals in a jungle. The weather can also be a big hurdle – but don’t worry, a drone is fast and can conduct a wide search in no time. Since it conducts search from the top – in the air – it gives a broader vision and travels fast.

Drones can track Storms

In the old movies, we saw strong hunters daring to chase storms and come out of it alive. Of course, that wasn’t reality, and not many would dare to run into a storm. But drones are immune to such things. The most advanced kind of storm hunter drones are now providing exceptional information and updates to organizations like NASA, and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to track the intensity and direction of storms as they form.

Moreover, these storm tracking drones are capable of collecting data. This data later helps to predict weather and give the most accurate possible forecast before a catastrophic storm is formed.

Drones can help to prevent crimes

Drones can be a great way to monitor events and prevent crimes and terrorist attacks. In large gatherings held in wide areas, it is difficult for a bunch of security officers to control each and everything. Moreover, despite tight security, unfortunate events have taken place in the past.

In the city of Ensenada, Mexico, the local police department has claimed that the drone led to more than 500 arrests, a 10 percent decrease in overall crime and a 30 percent decrease in home robberies.

Drones can cover a wide area and monitor the whole ground at once. Slightest of disturbance can be tracked before it turns into a big mess. Thieves and robbers can be easily spotted by monitoring their body movements. Thus, drones can prevent crimes and terrorist attacks.
