Why Twitter Has Temporarily Disabled Tweeting via SMS
Twitter is one of the popular social media platforms, having over 300 million users. Millions of celebrities and common people use it – even those celebrities who don’t use any other social media platform.
Recently, Twitter had to disable this feature due to security issues.
The company says,” We’re taking this step because of vulnerabilities that need to be addressed by mobile carriers and our reliance on having a linked phone number for two-factor authentication (we’re working on improving this).”
However, it is believed that the real reason for the sudden disabling of tweet via text feature is recent hacking of the company’s CEO account. Jack Dorsey’s Twitter account was recently hacked, which lead to hackers sending vulgar tweets using the Tweet via SMS method.
Using tweeting via SMS, hackers could send tweets through another account without being logged in to the account itself. All they needed was control of the phone number linked to that account.
Though the feature is pretty old and was only used when only a few people had smartphones. However, the thing is, it still exists and some markets are more dependent on it than others.
Apparently, the text to tweet feature could be kept off for some time in most countries. However, Twitter says it will soon reactive the feature in those markets that depends on it. The feature is expected to be only reactivated worldwide, when they believe it is secure and no more pose a threat to a user’s account and social prestige.
How long the Tweet via Text feature will remain disabled
Nobody knows, except Twitter how long it’s going to take. But one thing is certain here that Twitter will only enable it, once they have found the long term solution for this problem.
Twitter is the medium through which millions of celebrities, politicians, and athletes communicate with each other and fans. Slightest of negligence in the security of public accounts will bring unprecedented shame for its team and a significant drop in its userbase.
