Microsoft launches Surface Pro X and previews folding phone

At their annual surface hardware event, Microsoft announced ARM-based device with an ARM-based processor in it. Why it is a big deal because this is Microsoft’s first ARM-based device. The device will use the company’s very own custom SQ1 chip, which is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon and AI accelerator. This is the first surface with an integrated engine. The $999 Pro X will be available on November 5 and is now available for pre-order.

Microsoft began working on it a few years ago, that work culminated when HP launched a number of ARM-powered devices Asus and others, promising all-day battery life, the ability to run on almost every Windows application and performance comparable to a lower-end Intel chip. To match it, Microsoft is using a binary translator capable of converting X86 instructions into ARM64 as necessary and compiling almost all of the native Windows 10 libraries for the ARM architecture.

The 13-inch ARM-based Pro X will feature USB ports and LTW connectivity and flexible screen features. The screen will feature a 1400:1 contrast ratio and a 2880×1920 resolution. Moreover, there also a removable hard-drive, a first for the surface line.

Microsoft has also launched a new Surface pen for the Pro X particularly, which will have a storage space on the new Type Cover for the device. Microsoft has promised a 13 hours of battery life and a zero to 80 percent quick-charge time of under an hour for the device.

The prominent changes include slimmer display bezels, more rounded edges, and a thinner overall device. Microsoft has gone for two USB-C ports on the left-hand side, traditional Surface Connect charging port on the right-hand side. However, there is no headphone jack or USB-A ports.

The Surface Pro X is also the first Windows PC ever that will be shipped with an integrated AI engine. All in all, the Pro X features 9 teraflops of computing power.

Yep, there’s indeed a new keyboard as well. Though It’s almost the same Type Cover as the regular Surface Pro devices but includes a storage area where you can dock the new Surface Slim Pen for it to charge. Moreover, you can close the device while the Pen is inside, which is pretty cool.
