Google Updates Search Rankings to Favor Original News Reporting
Every now and then, Google updates its search rankings to keep the original content at the top. The sole purpose of these updates is to improve its search ranking system and reward unique content.
Google’s dominance over other search engines is due to its ability to spot the original and authentic content. And Google is regularly coming up with new updates to provide the best of the content to its users.
“While we typically show the latest and most comprehensive version of a story in news results, we’ve made changes to our products globally to highlight articles that we identify as significant original reporting. Such articles may stay in a highly visible position longer. This prominence allows users to view the original reporting while also looking at more recent articles alongside it.”
Now Google is emphasizing on original reporting and it is expected to take measures for this, in its upcoming updates. . The idea behind this change is to help both publishers and searchers. In this way, searchers will find useful content from an authentic source, while publishers will also enjoy the benefit and their content will reach more audience.
How will they recognize Original Reporting?
Well, up till now, there is no absolute definition of what qualifies as original reporting. There is also no standard place to figure out how original is one article over another.
“It can mean different things to different newsrooms and publishers at different times, so our efforts will constantly evolve as we work to understand the life cycle of a story.”
Indeed, it is going to be a challenge for Google how do they manage it in the future. Certain world news can be covered by multiple outlets at the same time, how would Google identify which one’s content is original and who stole it?
Though there is one way to do this yet, but Google is keen to find one soon. If an outlet publishes an article, and that article later becomes news itself, the priority will be given to the original article in this case.
What to expect in the Future?
Well, it seems like Google is going to do everything it takes to promote original content. And why shouldn’t it? Of course, the original publisher deserves the credit. In the past, we saw a lot of manipulation. The original publisher did the hard work, while someone else got the credit. Thus, people moved towards content manipulation and other techniques to rank higher, instead of producing original content. But now, the time isn’t far away, when people will get 100% credit for their unique content!
